Sorrento on foot, a city to be discovered!
Of ancient origins and home of the poet Torquato Tasso, Sorrento still preserves the unchanged charm of centuries of history and art.
Art and History a 10 minute walk!
Just a 10 minute walk from the hotel, you can find the museum Correale di Terranova considered a true gem of the city of Sorrento.
The museum is divided into 3 floors and hosts a large variety of Neapolitan and European arts from several centuries, archaeological items from the area, inlaid furniture according to typical local handicraft, pottery and much more.
The museum is opened from 9.00 to 14.00. Closed on Tuesdays.
For lovers of art another museum not to be missed is the Museum Bottega della Tarsia Lignea, which is witness to the long and popular tradition of inlaid woodwork.
The showroom allows you to admire furniture and ancient inlaid objects, presses and ancient pictures, you can also find tools used by these artisans.
The heart of Sorrento and its hidden corner
Located a pleasant 5 walk minute from the hotel you can reach the historical centre of Sorrento, where you can find the citys many attractive monuments which truly deserve a visit.
The busiest street in the historical centre is Via San Cesaro, it is lined with shops and is busy with tourists all year looking for souveniors to take home.
In the heart of this street you can find the Sedile Dominova, a building from 400AD and decorated with a splendid majolica dome, it was the ancient noble seat of the city of Sorrento.
Continuing on in the direction of Piazza Sant Antonino you will meet the Basilica of said Saint. Sant’Antonino is the patron saint of sea-men and the Basilica is full of pictures of boats which sea-men donated as votive offerings for keeping them safe while at sea.
Just a little further ahead you can can find Sorrento’s most panoramic point the Villetta comunale, from here you have amazing views out over the Gulf of Naples, and just beside the view point you can find the Cloisters of San Francesco which holds many musical events.
The picturesque fishing village of Marina Grande
Ulisse Deluxe is found at the beginning of Via del Mare, the road which takes you to the small fishing village of Marina Grande. This village was made famous by the film “Pane Amore e…” with Sophia Loren and Vittorio De Sica, directed by Dino Riso and is easily reached on foot from the hotel.
Marina Grande is the first fishing village of Sorrento and it has succeeded in preserving the characteristics of an old style fishing village, along the marina you can admire the different coloured houses, as well as the boats and the fishing nets that are laid out on the beach.
The village offers several bathing platforms, where during the hot summer months you can go for a swim or sunbathe, the village also has many excellent seafood restaurants.
If you find yourself in Sorrento during the month of July, don’t forget the inhabitants of Marina Grande celebrate their patron saint, Sant’Anna on 26 July, during this celebration the bay is full of boats and the decorations and lights mix with the lights of Sorrento and of the Gulf of Naples which create an astounding atmosphere.
