Leonardo and the Renaissance in Sorrento

Leonardo and the Renaissance Fantasy, an exhibition between Naples and the Routes of the Mediterranean

This is the title of the exhibition on the genius of Leonardo Da Vinci and the Italian Renaissance, which will be held in Sorrento from 26 June to 24 October 2010.

Organised by the Fondazione Sorrento in collaboration with the administration of the city council, the event will be held in the splendid setting of Villa Fiorentino, which will be restructured for the occasion and made even more welcoming.

The event will see the exclusive exhibition of the Lucan self portrait, the celebrated painting which is attributed to the same Tuscan artist, already exhibited in the Museum of the Ancient Peoples of Vaglio di Basilicata.  Besides the self portrait, the exhibition will host diverse reproductions of works and machines designed by Leonardo, thereby highlighting his genius.

Not just Leonardo Da Vinci.  The event of Villa Fiorentino will host also works of several other artists of the Renaissance, like Tintoretto, Lorenzo Lotto, Donatello and Raffaello. Moreover, directly from the Bellini museum in Florence, the sculptures of Giovanni della Robbia will be exhibited, more notably those depicting Dante and Petrarca.

“An exhibition that includes everything: from art, to science, to the philosophy of the Renaissance artist, therefore from paintings to sculpture.  And also the objective study, not just the face of Leonardo, but also of those techniques utilised by the Renaissance artist”, said Nicola Barbatelli, director of the exhibition.
