Herculaneum was destroyed, together with Pompei, by the eruption of the Vesuvius in the year 79 A.D. Herculaneum was a residential area, not holding Pompei’s business prominence, but full of well–to–do Romans’ opulent villas. When the catastrophe of 79 A.D. occurred, Herculaneum was submerged under a torrent of mud and lava that hardned into a soft tuff (a kind of coarse rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects which can be seen today. A large portion of treasures lie buried under the rock, so excavations are still being carried out. – Scheduled on: Mondays / Wednesdays – Entrance fee: Herculaneum Ruins Euro 11,00 – Price per person: Euro 32,50 (adults) - Euro 26,00 (children) |
