The “Amalfi Drive” is said to be the most spectacular in Europe: the winding cliff top road offers breathtaking panoramic views at every turn as far as Amalfi, one of the most ancient maritime republics and home town of Flavio Gioia as well, the man who invented the compass.
In the centre of Amalfi, the beautiful Cathedral stands superbly on the top of a great flight of steps leading up from the main square. Free time for lunch. Recommended to go and have a look to the “Arsenali”, the naval dockyards where they used to build the galleys of Amalfi’s fleet, and you cannot miss a visit to the Emerald Grotto, from the port of Amalfi.
Then you climb to Ravello where beautiful landscapes meet ancient and precious buildings. Here you will visit the Cathedral dedicated to San Pantaleone and Villa Rufolo which gave the musician Richard Wagner the ispiration to create one of his most famous works, “Parsifal”, and now houses a music concert festival in his honour every year.
